The thesis discusses the criteria that go into a bestseller. Its focus is on the American novel The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown and the German novel Das Parfum by Patrick Süskind. The analyses of both literary novels in the thesis provide answers to questions about bestseller criteria and describe how authors use them in their novels. It is established that both authors use similar criteria for writing such novels, which is fascinating since the novels originate from two completely different cultural backgrounds. The first chapter defines the term |bestseller| and its criteria. I analyse the criteria to see how valid they might in fact be and to what extent they contribute to the bestseller novel. The second part of the thesis is focused on the American novel The Da Vinci Code written by Dan Brown, where Brown's observation of the required criteria is established. The last part of the thesis is dedicated to the German novel Das Parfum written by Patrick Süskind. Süskind sticks to the criteria and masters presenting the role of a genius, although it originates from the 20th century. At some points the novels slightly deviate from the common criteria, where it is established that the authors use their own writing techniques. It is established that the deviation from the criteria does not influence negatively on the formation of the bestseller novel.
